Skin cancer and sun safety news round-up

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Skin cancer and sun safety issues have been in the news a lot recently. Here’s a round-up of some stories that may be of interest.

* BBC News reports that experts are warning against using High Street mole clinics, with concerns that some of the people analysing moles may not be as highly trained as a GP or dermatologist.

* The Daily Mail featured Dr Mike Brown, a senior advisor for Boots Sunscare, answering burning questions about suncream.

* WalesOnline report on a charity petition calling on the Welsh Assembly Government to give free suncream to all children in Wales under 11 years old, to help prevent skin cancer.

* Cancer Research UK had news on a worrying Teenage Cancer Trust report that suggests that some teens are getting sunburnt on purpose in order to get a tan.

* Female First report on a survey that found that parents may lack proper awareness about skin cancer and sun safety and may inadvertenly be putting children’s skin at risk.

* Also in the Daily Mail was the tragic story, Killed by Sunbed, about a mother of eight who died aged 31, just six months after being diagnosed with skin cancer.

Sunbeds to be banned for under 18s

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

The signifiant link between sunbed use and skin cancer has been recognised for some time and many organisations, including Cancer Research UK and Company magazine have been campaigning to get sunbed use banned for under 18s.

Finally, the private member’s bill to protect children and teenagers from the dangers of sunbeds has been passed by the House of Lords, just a day before Parliament is dissolved.

The bill will come into force this time next year. Although the full details have yet to be finalised, the law will mean that under 18s are banned from using sunbeds. It’s also believed that all coin-operated and unmmaned sunbeds will be banned, that all sunbed salons will be properly staffed and that proper health advice will be given out to anyone using a sunbed.
